5 things to know about Singapore’s Circuit Breaker Measures

Apr 9, 2020

On 3rd April 2020, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong addressed the nation to say that the government is introducing a new 'circuit breaker' measures in order to slow the community spread of COVID-19. The resounding message: stay at home and leave only for essential services.

But what exactly is an essential service? There's still a lot of uncertainty over what we can and can't do from now till May 4 when the measure is hopefully lifted if everyone does their part. Let us help clear the air and break down Singapore's new restrictions for the nation in the next few weeks.

Am I allowed to leave my house?

You should only go out for daily essentials like takeout or groceries. You can also leave the house to seek medical attention or other services like banking or the mailing of items. However, if these tasks are not urgent, please stay home.

Since I can only do takeaways, I can travel to wherever I want to take food out?

Yes, essential services will still be available in this period. Food and beverage outlets will remain open for takeaway and delivery orders. However, "this is not the time to use our public transport to get to the other sides of Singapore, for your favorite hawker dish", said Transport Minister Khaw Boon Wan in Parliament on the 6th of April 2020. Singaporeans should stay home and do what they need to do around their immediate neighborhood.

Can I meet my friends and family?

You are advised to not see anyone beyond your household during this circuit breaker period, so you should not be hopping from house to house to check-in and see how they’re doing. Social gatherings with family and friends are also not allowed, especially your older relatives who are more at risk. Try organizing virtual meetups instead on Skype, Zoom, Google Hangouts or even House party!

Business as Usual for us!

According to gov.sg, essential services that need to stay open include such as public transport, F&B places that cater to the daily needs of the people. Other essential services that remain open are government services, telecommunication services as well as banking and finance services. If I see a non-essential business continue to operate even though it is not supposed to, what should I do?

Please report this business, including providing relevant such as its details, company name, address and relevant evidence (e.g. photographs) to CovidGoBusiness@mti.gov.sg.

Confused? Here's an easy way to remember it. Unless you need to head out for daily necessities, food or medical help, just remember this phrase:

Stay safe, stay healthy and stay at home!
